The Housing Challenge: Europe’s Next Urban Crisis?

🏘️ The Housing Challenge: Europe’s Next Urban Crisis?

Across Europe, cities are facing a growing challenge: how to provide housing that is both sustainable and accessible. Rising demand, climate pressures, energy standards, and affordability gaps are forcing cities to rethink how homes are designed, built, and integrated into the urban environment.

This issue is felt across the EU. According to the Council of the European Union, house prices and rents have increased significantly over the past decade, while many households struggle to find affordable and adequate housing.

Sustainable housing brings together materials, energy performance, and long-term resilience to create healthy, future-ready communities.

Within the INHABITAT Project, students explore how digital innovation, data-driven planning, and sustainable design can help tackle this housing challenge.

⇒ From advanced modeling and climate-responsive design to urban policy and smart systems, the program equips future professionals to develop solutions that cities urgently need.

As Europe moves toward a greener, more inclusive future, sustainable housing will remain one of the defining challenges of urban transformation – and one that the INHABITAT MSc students must be ready to overcome.
