Why do we care about urban sustainability? Class INH-A1

🌱 Why Do We Care About Urban Sustainability?

What makes a city livable, resilient, and future-ready?
Urban sustainability isn’t a buzzword; it’s fundamental.

The Facts:

→ Cities consume roughly 75% of the world’s primary energy and produce 71-76% of CO₂ emissions (Urban Energy, Climate Change | UN-Habitat World)

→ Urban areas are also on the front lines of climate impacts, housing shortages, and infrastructure challenges (Habitat Day Concept Note | UN-Habitat)

That’s why the INHABITAT MSc makes urban sustainability a priority from day one.

📚 In Semester A – Winter Term 2025-2026, students in Class 1 explore:

  • Circular & regenerative construction
  • Biophilic design and green infrastructure
  • Smart value chains and sustainability assessment
  • IoT and GIS for real-time environmental monitoring
  • Life cycle assessment and urban system modeling
  • Hands-on case studies in smart infrastructure & green buildings

Students analyze real-world urban challenges through challenge-based learning and design data-driven, climate-resilient solutions that align with circular economy goals.

Cities need smart systems, inclusive design, and informed action.
INHABITAT students are learning how to build exactly that.
